Triumph Bonneville Royals
Victor S, UK. 1981 US Model

Comments from Victor.

Hi chaps.
Well its here.
Looks pretty good.
Starts with 2-3  kicks fine but pressing the green button only produces a whir from the starter.
Replacing the wimpy 110cca battery with a known good 180cca only produced a slightly more enthusiastic whir - but no engagement. Missing or terminally ill  sprag then I suspect. I did want an ES bike but it is true what they stay, it starts easily on the kick.
I will gather the parts and set to getting it working when time allows. In the meantime it will just be the kick starter. I must admit I do not like the idea of something perhaps being broken inside so might get on it sharpish!
Have obtained and applied the decal for the rear caliper  cover and took delivery today of the veglia speedo from Florida. Decided just to go ahead and buy it. I will fit that when I get back from my hols. I thought the indicators were a bit lazy so replaced the little flasher for a new one and they are fine now.
As for the split nut cover on the headstock I have found a nut with cover for  sale - again in the US - but even I who can spend money like there is no tomorrow kind of hicced at the approx $50 with shipping that it would cost, just so I can have the plastic cap. The nut appears to be a spread nut(?)  and has 'spread' a little too much for the hardish plastic cap to 'give' enough to go over without splitting.
I arrived at a solution and that was to place a 'bike clock' over the unsightly open nut. A departure from originality I know but hey I like to know the time! Will send a separate pic as this iPad app only allows one pic at a time.
I will be at the bike week rally in Daytona in a couple of weeks so will look out for a cap in the junk sale, might get lucky you never know.
Will send some more pics later, maybe from a show or two and if there is any sunshine.
Everything looks better in the sunshine!
Best regards,
Vic.
